“WEI LAI” (FUTURE) Sets Sail for Success: Advancing Bunkering Services and Achieving new Milestones
In recent years, Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG)has fully implemented China’s dual-carbon strategy. Anchored in the industry's low carbon transition trend and pursuing the emerging green fuel track, SIPG has taken the lead in developing clean energy fueling services, including Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and green methanol. By collaborating with major international shipping companies, Shanghai port is advancing the adoption of new fuels and renewable energy, while enforcing stringent operational standards and safety protocols for bunkering operations. SIPG continues to enhance its low carbon infrastructure, achieving significant progress in providing LNG bunkering services to international voyage ships.
On March 15, 2022, the bunkering vessel “Hai Gang Wei Lai” (or “WEI LAI”) fueled the containership CMA CGM SYMI with 7,066 cubic meters of bonded LNG during operations at Shengdong International Container Terminal in Shanghai Yangshan Deepwater Port, where 2,300.75 TEU containers were simultaneously loaded and unloaded. This achievement marked the first ship-to-ship SIMPOS LNG bunkering for an international voyage ship and the first such operation for any port in China. Since this milestone operation, the “WEI LAI” has continued to set impressive operational benchmarks. On August 20, 2024, the bunkering vessel “WEI LAI” fueled the CMA CGM INTEGRITY with 8,492.2 cubic meters of LNG, completing its 100th SIMOPS bunkering at the port of Shanghai. Most recently, on November 20, 2024, it bunkered the CMA CGM PATAGONIA with a record-breaking 11,510 cubic meters of LNG, marking the 100th SIMOPS bunkering at Shengdong International Container Terminal and setting a new record for the largest single bunkering volume.
With major global shipping companies gradually introducing and deploying dual-fuel vessels, the adoption of clean energy is rapidly advancing, highlighting green, low-carbon as a fundamental consensus and shared goal for the future development of the port and shipping industry. Since its commencement, the ship-to-ship SIMOPS bunkering service of “WEI LAI” has received significant attention from the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, and garnered strong support from relevant units and departments. SIPG remains resolute in its commitment to expanding the clean fuel bunkering market for international voyage ships, advancing the upgrading of service quality, and continuing to strive to enhance service capabilities and support the high-quality development of the Shanghai International Shipping Center.
