Presidents of China and Peru Announce the Inauguration of Chancay Port, a Landmark Project Supported by SIPG

On the evening of November 14, 2024 local time, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte attended the inauguration ceremony of Chancay Port via video link at the Presidential Palace in Lima.

President Xi and President Boluarte were briefed by their respective transport ministers, and watched a video of the port project together. The two Presidents gave the order to “Commence Operation!”

President Xi extended his congratulations on the successful inauguration of Chancay Port paid tribute to the builders of the two countries for completing all tasks together with high quality despite the COVID-19 pandemic. President Xi said it is very inspiring and encouraging to see such a modern port take shape in just a few years. The Chancay Port is not only a deep-water port, but also South America’s first smart, green port. It is set to bring substantial gains and many job opportunities to Peru, and strengthen Peru as a land-sea gateway connecting Asia and Latin America. From Chancay to Shanghai, the Belt and Road Initiative is bearing fruit in Peru before our eyes. A new Asia-Latin America land-sea corridor for the new era is taking shape.

President Xi stressed that the two sides should ensure that the Chancay Port is successfully built, managed and operated, and improve its shipment capacity and overall service quality. The two sides can actively explore leveraging the corridor to enhance logistics, using improved logistics to boost trade, and utilizing trade growth to drive industrial development. Parties should consult together, build together and benefit together, with a view to empowering common development in Pacific-rim economies, including China and Peru, so that the port truly opens a route to prosperity and better lives for Peru and other Latin American and Caribbean countries, produces win-win outcomes in a larger area, and brings more tangible benefits and a sense of fulfillment for people in the wider region.

On behalf of the SIPG, Vice President Sam Liu attended the inauguration ceremony at the Chancay port, and expressed the Group’s gratitude to the teams behind the project, particularly the frontline employees, for their dedication. He encouraged them to make persistent efforts, overcome difficulties and challenges, and carry forward the “Shanghai Port Yangshan Spirit of the New Era” to advance China’s smart port technologies globally and ensure the smooth operation of key national overseas port projects.

Chancay Port, situated in Chancay Bay, north of Lima, the capital of Peru, stands as a flagship project of China-Peru Belt and Road cooperation and marks South America's first smart port. Nezha Technology, a subsidiary of SIPG, is the provider developed and implemented the port’s Terminal Operating System (TOS). Leveraging expertise from projects like Yangshan Port Phase IV and the Luodong Container Terminal, Nezha Technology tailored an integrated automation solution for Chancay Port, encompassing automated container terminals, bulk cargo terminals, and a comprehensive process platform. By adopting digital technology, the system facilitates resource management and ensures precise allocation, effectively meeting the port’s operational demands.

Over six months, the Nezha team implemented and fine-tuned the system onsite in Peru, conducting comprehensive  installation guidance, system testing, personnel training, and completion inspections. Their efforts played a crucial role assisting the port in achieving holistic digital management.

Shengdong International Container Terminal company provided essential support for the inauguration ceremony of Chancay Port. The first container bound for Chancay from Shanghai, was efficiently loaded and unloaded at Shengdong International Container Terminal, then transported by the vessel COSCO Shipping Peru departing from Yangshan Port. Previously, most cargo from Peru to Asia and Oceania required transshipment through Central or North America. With the completion and the trail operation of Chancay Port, the launching of two direct liner services connecting Shanghai Port and Chancay Port has reduced the transit time for cargo from Peru to China to 23 days, saving more than 20% in logistics costs. This convenient export corridor will open the door for the entire Latin American region to be integrated into the new wave of Asia-Pacific economic integration.
