In mid-July, Typhoon Bavi, the ninth typhoon of 2026, swept across the region, with severe weather disrupting vessel operations at the Port of Shanghai for nearly four days. After the storm passed, a surge of oceangoing and feeder vessels that had sought shelter converged on the Port, creating intense pressure on berth availability, terminal operations, vessel turnaround, and yard capacity. Confronted with these challenges, Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG) responded with coordinated planning and centralized dispatch, mounting an all-out recovery effort to clear the backlog of both main trade and feeder services and restore normal port operations as quickly as possible.
Since port operations fully resumed on July 14, impressive achievements have continued to emerge across the Port of Shanghai. Working in close coordination, SIPG’s terminals have maintained full-capacity operations, with frontline employees remaining at their posts, working in shifts, and rising to the challenge throughout the recovery effort. During this period, the Port sustained an average daily container throughput of 172,000 TEUs, with operational performance continuing to improve steadily.
Individual terminals also delivered record-breaking performances. By maximizing equipment utilization, refining operating procedures, and optimizing workforce deployment, Zhendong Branch set a series of new operational records. On July 23, the terminal handled 32,130 TEUs in a single day, surpassing its previous record of 29,156 TEUs set on November 15, 2025. On the same day, its first shift handled 12,954 TEUs, exceeding the previous shift record of 12,625 TEUs, also set on November 15, 2025. Meanwhile, Shangdong Branch handled 29,910 TEUs on August 1, breaking its previous single-day record of 29,388 TEUs established on April 30, 2026.
On the same day, Luodong Branch handled 8,373 TEUs, surpassing its previous single-day record of 8,021 TEUs set on November 6, 2025. As terminals across the Port continued to push the limits of operational performance, a strong culture of striving for excellence took shape, providing powerful momentum for the Port to achieve a new record for single-day container throughput on the first day of August.
From meticulous typhoon preparedness and a swift return to full operations to the record-breaking performance achieved on August 1, this recovery effort, spanning the transition from July to August, fully demonstrated SIPG’s integrated command and dispatch capabilities and its highly refined operational management. Above all, it demonstrated the dedication, resilience, and determination of the entire SIPG workforce in meeting challenges head-on and delivering results.
Moving forward, SIPG will continue to sustain high operational performance, further optimize its cargo collection and distribution network, enhance the efficiency of its smart port operations, and strengthen the resilience and connectivity of its international shipping hub. In doing so, the Group will help ensure the stable and efficient operation of global industrial and supply chains, reinforce the Port of Shanghai’s position as the world’s leading container port, and inject fresh impetus into the high-quality development of Shanghai as an international shipping center.
