From August 15 to 16, 2026, the Port of Shanghai once again set a new global record in green shipping. SIPG Energy, a subsidiary of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG), successfully bunkered the CMA CGM OSIRIS, a 13,000-TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessel operated by the CMA CGM Group, with a record 8,016 tons of domestically produced biomass methanol in a single operation. This not only set a new record for the largest single biomass methanol bunkering at a Chinese port, but also broke the global record of 3,643 tons set by the same team in March this year.

The achievement demonstrates the Port of Shanghai’s growing capabilities in providing integrated green-fuel bunkering services. It also shows that, through close collaboration across the industry chain, the large-scale adoption of alternative marine fuels is gradually becoming a reality.

During the bunkering operation, SIPG leveraged its strengths in integrating port resources and coordinating operations, demonstrating its professional capabilities in green-fuel bunkering services. The Hai Gang Zhi Yuan, the first methanol bunkering ship in China operated by SIPG Energy, safely and efficiently carried out the ship-to-ship bunkering at the Port of Shanghai.

With guidance and support from the relevant port authorities, multiple parties, including the pilot station and Fuxing Shipping Service Co., Ltd., worked closely, each performing its respective role, to ensure the effective implementation of measures covering key aspects such as the operation plan, vessel movements, berthing and unberthing arrangements, on-site monitoring, and emergency response. Through close coordination and joint efforts, all parties not only set a new bunkering record but also significantly improved bunkering efficiency.

Notably, most of the biomass methanol used in this operation was supplied by Shanghai Electric’s Taonan Project in Jilin Province. The fuel was transported by road from Taonan to Dalian, where it was consolidated for onward shipment by sea to storage facilities in Shanghai, before ultimately being delivered for vessel bunkering at the Port of Shanghai. This established a cross-regional supply chain linking “production in Jilin, transshipment in Dalian, and bunkering in Shanghai. It demonstrates the Port of Shanghai’s capabilities in organizing large-scale biomass methanol supplies, ensuring reliable fuel supply, and providing bunkering services.

Leveraging their respective strengths and complementary capabilities, the three parties have joined forces to advance green shipping. The CMA CGM Group, with its global shipping network and low-carbon fleet, provides stable end-use applications and market demand. Shanghai Electric, with its deep expertise in the biomass methanol industry, lays a solid foundation for the production and supply of green fuels. SIPG, drawing on its core port resources and well-established service system, has broken down barriers across the entire fuel supply chain, from transportation and storage to final bunkering. From the first record-setting bunkering earlier this year to this large-scale operation, the three parties have built on their respective strengths, with their collaboration delivering increasingly significant results.

Moving forward, the three parties will continue to deepen and broaden their cooperation across the green shipping sector. More specifically, SIPG Energy will pursue three strategic development goals and focus on strengthening three key capabilities, continuously enhancing its capacity to ensure green fuel supplies and support large-scale bunkering. Working with partners across the industry chain, it will further develop the biomass methanol supply chain and promote the regular, large-scale, and high-quality provision of green marine fuel services, helping drive the global shipping industry’s transition to a greener, low-carbon future.
